Swim England and RLSS UK provide exclusive offer for Rookie Lifeguard course

Swim England and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) UK are working in partnership to help more people learn to swim and enjoy the water as safely as possible, providing an exclusive offer for teachers and coaches to extend their skills.

Swim England Level Two qualified teachers and coaches can apply to become qualified to deliver the RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard Programme for a special reduced price of £10.

It is one of a number of upskilling opportunities that will be created by the partnership in the coming months.

The Rookie Lifeguard Programme teaches children valuable water safety and lifesaving skills in a fun way.

Katie Towner, Swim England Head of Learn to Swim, said: “The Rookie Lifeguard programme is about extending the skills and abilities of young swimmers, helping them to be aware of how to avoid dangers and enjoy the water safely. The Award is also a comfort to parents to know that their children understand how to be safe in the water.

“For Learn to Swim it provides a valuable addition to the Learn to Swim programme for those children who love swimming but don’t want to move into the competitive sport. Offering alternatives such as Rookie Lifeguard will help motivate and retain your swimmers for longer.”

Fun and safety

The programme can be run as a stand-alone by leisure centres or swim schools or as part of school swimming lessons.

Lee Heard, Director of Partnerships for RLSS UK, said: “Rookie Lifeguard offers many opportunities to learn key water safety skills in the water but also to have fun.

“We are really excited to be working in partnership with Swim England to get even more young people to enjoy water based activity as safely as possible.”

Swim England Level 2 qualified teachers and coaches need to have previous lifesaving or lifeguarding experience to complete the course.
