85-year-old David Cumming sets new 200m Butterfly world record

Eastbourne’s David Cumming ended his first day at the 2023 Masters National Championship with four records broken after a world record swim in the Open/Male 80-85 Years 200m Butterfly.

The 200m Butterfly event was his biggest achievement of the day, as he broke a world record to round off his first three sessions at the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships. His time came in at 4:07:30 more than a minute faster than the previous British best time.

The 85-year old’s record-breaking adventure started in the opening event of session two as he competed in the 400-metre individual medley. His time of 8:08:28, earnt him his first European record in the 85-89 division.

During the race his 50-metre butterfly split came in at a time of 51:57 giving him his first British record.

The excitement wasn’t finished in the 400m Individual Medley though as his 100-metre butterfly time was also fast enough for a British Record. However just hours later Cumming broke his own record in the 200-metre butterfly event. Earning himself his fourth record of the afternoon.

Rebecca Guy then made it four world records for the Championships so far after she smashed the Female 50m Freestyle world record for the 30-34 Years age group.

Guy got off to a flying start in the ‘splash and dash’ race eventually touching the wall in a 24.30 that was the first time to go under the 25 second mark in the event.

She was the clear winner on day, despite the talent of swimmers behind her, finishing almost three seconds quicker than silver medallist Holly Booth (Trafford Metro).

It added to her European record in the Female 50m Butterfly in session two as the once again made the record claxon sound at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

There was another record for Michelle Ware too, with the Woking swimmer setting a national best in the 50-54 Years 100m Freestyle. She finished in 27.40 that was 0.38 than Helen Sadler’s previous record – set in 2020.

Fordham hits two European records

Session three got off to a flying start as Dartmoor Darts broke the European Record in the 4x100m medley team.

The Dartmoor group, made up of Daniel Cross, Kieran Preston, Sonny Trigg, and Regan Lloyd, smashed the 2016 British best by almost eight seconds this afternoon.

Their time of 3:41:62 is a huge improvement on Kidlington’s 3:49:33, a record which has been dormant for seven years.

Alyson Fordham’s set two European records in both the Female 65-59 Years 100m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle.

It began with the 50m Freestyle where she dashed to the line in a time of 29.45 to become the first European to swim under the half a minute mark for her age group.

The time won her gold by more than two seconds on the day showing the strength of the 67-year-olds performance at Ponds Forge.

She followed that up with an impressive backstroke swim, finishing in 1:18.79 which was 0.11 quicker than the previous record and more than ten seconds faster than her nearest rival.

Elizabeth Godfrey also put her name into the record books thanks to a time of 1:07.37 in the Female 40-44 Years 100m Backstroke.

Two Welsh records were set in the Female 50m Freestyle. Helen Gorman (City of Cardiff) set a 28.41 in the 50-54 Years category whilst Ruby Verge (27.76) broke the best Welsh time in the 20-24 Years event.

Godfrey finished 0.12 quicker than the previous fastest time as won the race to the wall to win gold in a new British best time.

Heath hits another European best

The records kept on coming as Amanda Heath continued her fine form with a European record in the Female 200m Butterfly.

The Spencer Swim Team member knocked more than a second off the previous top time thanks to a 3:10.40 in the evening session.

Heath came into session three after breaking her own world record in the Female 1oom Breaststroke in session two and added to that success ahead of what looks to be a fine weekend for the 66-year-old.

Another European record broken in the third session, this one coming from Michael Hodgson in the 50m Freestyle event.

The 56-year-old Woking swimmer had an incredible swim as he just managed to slip under the European record.

Michael’s time of 24:57 was cutting it close to the 24:83, and he also secured the British record earlier this year with a time he’s not only improved it but gone one further by grabbing the European top time.

The Open/Male 100m Backstroke saw two records broken late into the afternoon by Steve Grossman and Ben Harkin.

71-year-old Grossman swam a mighty 01:15:69 which saw him slip just under the British record. The previous time was 1:15:78, meaning Grossman clipped the record by less than tenth of a second

The Wellingborough swimmer has also picked up three medals today.

The second record of the 100-metres Backstroke came from 49-year-old Ben Harkin.

Harkin who swims for Warrington, secured a time of 58:30 putting him well over a second in front of the previous time, 59:89.

The other Record broken came in the final event of day one. Woking’s 4×200 Mixed metre freestyle team snatched the British Record.

The mixed relay team made up of David Bryant, Michelle Ware, Jennie Clarke, and Michael Hodgson recorded a time of 8:58:07, the first ever 200+ category to go under nine minutes.

The previous record held by East Leeds was recorded back in 2016 with a time of 9:03:10.
