Home nations to authorise eligibility for world and European championships

Athletes competing at World Aquatics and European Aquatics Masters Championships will no longer have to complete an international permit when travelling independently.

Following feedback from the Masters community, Swim England, Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales will now authorise eligibility to compete for individuals.

This will be based on entry lists which are submitted to the home nations by World Aquatics and European Aquatics to verify an athlete’s membership and eligibility to enter.

However, if a club is organising travel, accommodation and training for its members, a team permit will still need to be completed.

The changes will come into effect from the 2025 championships.

Make process easier

Leanne Brace, Swim England head of membership development, said: “We know the international permit requirement was something which frustrated the Masters athletes who take part in the European Aquatics and World Aquatics Masters Championships.

“So, we’re delighted to be able to confirm that, for these two events, the home nations will now authorise their eligibility based on the entry lists we receive.

“This will reduce the administration and make the process much easier for those athletes heading to these championships.

“Clubs will still need to complete a team permit if they are organising the trips for members as this does provide a level of insurance as part of their home nations affiliation.”

Athletes taking part in any other overseas events will still need to complete the international permit if travelling individually.
