More than 60 records broken at British Masters Championships 2024

A thrilling three days of racing at the 2024 British Masters Championships saw more than 60 new records and a number of personal best swims in Swansea.

The Wales National Pool hosted the event from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 April where four world, 12 European and 49 British records were broken.

Masters swimmers from all across the UK came together for the event which showcased the fun and competitive spirit of the Masters community.

The top prize from the weekend was retained by Trafford Metro. They claimed the prestigious Cupar Trophy for the second year in a row thanks to the team’s incredible strength in depth allowing them to claim the most points across the weekend.

The trophy was collected by Bethany Hogg – daughter of former Swim England Masters Working Group Chair Verity Dobbie – who’s taken the trophy back to the North West.

One of the many swimmers that helped Trafford Metro to the title was Judy Brown, who became the new world record holder in the Female 60-64 Years 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:41.09. Jo Corben of SD Trojan also set a new worlds best in the 50-54 Years event, setting a 2:26.14.

Matthew Guy Clay was the other individual swimmer to set a new world record time. He set a time of 27.10 in the Open/Male 40-44 Years 50m Backstroke in an opening leg of a relay to claim a new benchmark time.

Basingstoke’s relay teams were one of many to have a strong meet but it was their Female 160-199 Years 4x100m Medley Relay quartet of Elizabeth Godfrey, Erin Robertson, Fleur Turner and Sarah Hunt who romped home with a new worlds best of 4:36.25.

Elsewhere, Otter’s Derek Parr was one of those that stood out with four new British records to his name in the 80-84 years age group. Those included both a 1500m and 800m freestyle effort as well as the 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly.

York City’s Emma Wills broke one European and two individual British records whilst both Woking and City of Sheffield’s relay teams came away with six new records apiece.

During the Championships the winners of the 2023 British Masters Decathlon were also honoured.

In the open/male individual event Hodgson took top spot with Ben Harkin and Chris Jones rounding out the top three.

Woking’s Hodgson wasn’t the clubs only swimmer on top as Georgina Heyn led a Woking one-two in the female event. Ware was second with Gateshead & Whickham’s Judith Pearson in third.

Woking also took top open/male club thanks to Hodgson with Harrogate District winning the female club award.  Julie Hoyle, Karen Graham, Joanne Beardsworth and Phillipa Rickard made up the Harrogate team.

The individual top three each won a voucher from Ness Swimwear with £100 for first place, £75 for second and £25 for third. Each of the top teams also won a £100 voucher.
