Cheddar Kingfishers Swimming Club in Somerset is looking for a part-time head coach to start the week commencing 2nd September. This is a self-employed role based on 20 hours a week of which 11 hours are coaching poolside, the remainder being for either administration or competition coaching. Alternatively, you could be paid an enhanced rate for the 11 hours of coaching time and a day rate for supporting swimmers at competitions. There is the opportunity to increase hours of work by teaching within the Learn to Swim Academy, both within group lessons and private lessons. The hourly rate is from £16 to £23.50 per hour.

We are a friendly club with 89 swimmers from ages 8 to 19 plus 15 masters swimmers. Under the outgoing coach, the club has seen an impressive improvement which we want to continue. Our swimmers compete in open meets; county and regional championships; plus local leagues (Cotswold League and Four Seasons).  We have good working relationships with larger local clubs and hope to develop these further.

The poolside team comprises the head coach and two volunteer assistant coaches, complemented by the enthusiastic committee and other volunteers. We are based at Kings Fitness and Leisure Centre, Cheddar, North Somerset. This has a 5-lane 25m pool with fantastic views over playing fields giving a really nice feel when poolside!

This position would suit a less experienced coach looking to develop their leadership or would be suitable for someone with more experience. The right person would be well supported professionally and personally by the volunteer coaches and the committee.

Knowledge and Experience

You should have:

  • Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate/ASA Level 2 Coaching Award or equivalent
  • Safeguarding training
  • Understanding of Long Term Athlete Development
  • Knowledge (and ideally) experience in working with learn to swim programmes
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) to meet current Swim England requirements

  • Enthusiasm to work with age group and masters swimmers of all abilities.
  • An encouraging and empowering attitude.
  • The ability to communicate well with children;  parents; coaches and the committee.
  • The ability to manage your own time.
  • A drive to continually develop your own skills as a coach.

Experience/qualifications in land-based strength and conditioning would be desirable.

Kings Fitness and Leisure is committed to safeguarding young people and promoting the welfare of children, and all staff appointed will undergo online checks and will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
